The 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de León’s arrival on Florida’s east coast presents wonderful opportunities to classroom teachers to enrich the teaching of Florida’s history. Commemorative events will take place in all 67 counties which will make the history of Florida come alive.
Florida Arts on Tour

The purpose of the State Touring Program is to bring live performance by the finest of Florida's performing and visual artists to every corner of the state. Any non-profit organization may request fee support to present one or more artists featured in the current roster. The application deadline is every May 1st. Presenters must work directly with the artist to arrange booking and contract details before applying for fee support. Organizations in underpopulated counties are given priority.
Next Generation Sunshine State Standards

Florida Memory supports the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards Florida History strand. Resource types include exhibits, photo exhibits, collections, and individual documents. Benchmarks are arranged by grade level.
Teaching Florida

“TeachingFlorida.org” is a program of the Florida Humanities Council designed to bring the study of Florida into the classrooms of our state. “In recognition of the upcoming 500th anniversary of Florida’s founding in 1513, TeachingFlorida.org is launching with a debut unit on Florida’s Spanish Colonial past. The unit features articles on colonial St. Augustine, Florida’s original Native American inhabitants, black society in colonial Florida, and much more."

History of the United States Colored Troops: a Florida history 4th grade lesson plan

This lesson plan was developed to introduce students to the formation, experiences, and contributions of the United States Colored Troops (USCT) during the Civil War as well as their influence on the outcome of the conflict. Special emphasis has been placed on the 2nd Infantry Regiment that was based in Key West, Florida and involved in numerous actions around the state. Materials are designed to meet requirements set forth in Title XLVIII, Chapter 1003, sections f. and h. of the Florida Education Code. Corresponding Sunshine State Standards are identified in this document.
